Symbolism
In the story Summer ball, there are many examples of symbolism. For example, one of the new friends that Danny meets when he is switched to a different cabin has a basketball that means a lot to him. This friend Zack, has had the same basketball ever since he was 6 years old. This ball means more than the world to him. It was given to him by his parents. When the camp bully purposely pops the ball by putting to much air in it, he is devastated. At the end of the story, Danny goes to the store where he has seen the exact same ball and gives it to Zack as a present.
Another example of symbolism in the story is Tess's camera. Danny's best friend, Tess Hewitt, has a passion for photography and taking any pictures. To Tess her camera is everything to her because it was given to her by her uncle. When Tess's camera gets broke visiting Danny at camp, she is force to get a new one. This new camera symbolizes the friendship between Danny and Tess. Whenever they hang out now they usually go to the park and spend time taking pictures.
